Mile Marker

Privacy Policy

Effective October 10, 2026

This policy covers the Mile Marker iPhone app and this website. Both are run by Redstone Oak Investments LLC, a Texas limited liability company ("we", "us").

The short version

Mile Marker has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we never sell your information. Your location is never sent to us. Apple's map services receive it to draw the map and plan routes, and to find a street address when you're outside the 13 covered counties. Phones in your group see it only if you turn on Share my location.

Location

The app uses your location while it is open to show the road and mile marker you are on. If you turn on the lock screen reading (Live Activity), it keeps using your location while the phone is locked, and your iPhone shows its location indicator. Either way, that position is never sent to us. The only places it goes are Apple's map services, described below, and your group if you turn on sharing.

If you turn on Share my location, the app asks for "Always" location access so it can keep sharing while your screen is locked, and your iPhone shows its location indicator. Sharing is off by default. You can turn it off at any time in the app, or in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Mile Marker. Turn sharing off and nothing leaves the phone.

Groups

To join a group you enter a share code. The code stays in your phone's Keychain. Only a one-way hash of it is stored online, never the code itself.

When Share my location is on, about every 15 seconds or 100 meters the app sends your position, heading, the name you chose for the map and the time to Apple's iCloud (CloudKit). Only phones using the same code can see it. Positions older than 15 minutes are hidden.

We keep no location history. Each phone has one position record, and every update overwrites it. When you stop sharing, or open the app with sharing off, your phone deletes that record. If your phone stops reporting without switching off (for example, a dead battery or a deleted app), your last shared position stays stored but hidden until you stop sharing or reopen the app. It is never shown after 15 minutes.

When you join a group, the name you chose for the map is added to the group's list of people, so members can pick who to send a pin to.

Every saved pin and saved address is set to Only me, which keeps it on your phone, or My group. Only pins you choose to share leave the phone. A shared pin's name, description, coordinates, your map name and the time are stored with the group the same way until you delete it.

You can also send a pin to one person in your group. They can accept or decline it. The group's iCloud data keeps a record of who sent which pin to whom and whether it was accepted. The app shows a sent pin only to the person it was sent to, but it is stored with the group's data, where other members' copies of the app could technically reach it. Don't send anything you wouldn't want your group to see.

This data is held in the app's iCloud storage, operated by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. Apple files each record under an anonymous iCloud ID that the app never reads or shows. We can technically view these records, but we do not look at them except to fix a reported problem, and we never sell or share them.

Anyone with your share code can see your position while you are sharing. Give the code only to people you trust, and turn sharing off when you don't need it.

Apple Maps

The map, satellite view, turn by turn directions and street addresses come from Apple's MapKit. To draw the map or plan a route, your phone sends requests to Apple, which may include the area you are viewing and the start and end of a route. Inside the 13 Concho Valley counties, street addresses come from data stored in the app, so finding one sends nothing anywhere. Outside those counties, while the app is open and has cell service, it sends your current position to Apple to look up the nearest street address, at most every 20 seconds and only after you have moved. The app doesn't store the address it gets back.

When the offline map is on, the app draws its own map from data on the phone and sends nothing over the network: no map requests, no address lookups, no directions and no group updates.

If you ask Siri for your location, the app answers from the phone. Siri itself is run by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. Apple handles that data under Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not receive it.

Data stored on your phone

The road, mile marker and street address data ships inside the app. Saved places, pins you keep to yourself, and settings such as map style stay on your phone in a protected file. Deleting the app deletes them.

Copy and Share

If you tap Copy or Share, the app places your location, or a pin's name, description, coordinates and an Apple Maps link, on the clipboard or hands it to the app you pick. That only happens when you tap it, and what happens next is up to you and that app.

Crash reports and beta feedback

If you have turned on "Share with App Developers" in iOS Settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash and usage reports. If you test a beta through TestFlight, Apple shares the feedback and screenshots you choose to send, along with basic device details. We use these only to fix problems.

Email

If you email us, we receive your address and whatever you write. We use it only to answer you, and we delete it when it is no longer needed.

This website

This site sets no cookies and runs no analytics or ad trackers. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes basic request data such as IP addresses to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, under Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.

Children

Mile Marker is not directed to children under 13, and groups and location sharing should not be used by them.

Your choices and rights

You control what you share. Stop sharing deletes your position. You can delete any pin you shared with your group. Delete my shared data removes your position, your name from the group's list of people, and the pins you shared or sent from this phone. Other people's pins can only be deleted by them. A pin someone has accepted, or saved to their own map from your group pins, is copied onto their phone and stays there after you delete yours.

Pins can only be deleted from the phone that shared them. If you reinstall the app or switch phones, pins you shared from the old install stay in the group and can't be deleted from the new one, so delete them before you switch.

If you have emailed us and want that email deleted, or you have a question under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act or any other privacy law, write to milemarker@redstoneoak.com.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change would let us collect personal information, we will say so in the app before it takes effect.
